Guide: Screens and mobile

Building healthy, coherent and progressively autonomous use of screens, mobile, video games and social media in the family, ages 6 to 18.

This guide helps you build, at home, a healthy use of screens, mobile, video games and social media. It is not about counting minutes, but about creating a clear, coherent and progressively autonomous framework that accompanies your children from their first contacts with technology to the responsible management of digital life.

1. Why screens generate so many conflicts

Conflict over screens is rarely just a matter of time. It almost always mixes several things at once:

  • Difficult transitions. Leaving a highly attractive activity for a less stimulating one can be hard for many people, and especially so for a developing brain.
  • Autonomy at play. As children grow, they want to decide. Screens are a terrain where this drive for autonomy shows up very early.
  • Limits that must be set. Setting limits creates friction, and screens are an area where limits are tested every day.
  • Need to belong. For many children and teenagers, being connected is how they belong to the group.
  • Entertainment designed to retain. Some contents, games and platforms incorporate mechanisms that can lead us to spend more time on them or return to them.
  • Unclear family rules. When rules change, are improvised or are not explained, conflict increases.

Understanding what lies behind the conflict helps you respond better: you are not fighting your child, you are managing a complex educational challenge.
